I’m very happy to share my virtual friend, Molly Clee, and her business Spearmint Spruce with you today. I’ve been following Molly on Instagram for some time now and always find inspiration for mothering, homeschool, and life in general. Her words are always timely and make me nod my head in agreement. And as a homeschooling mama with five littles around the same ages as mine, it’s hard not to be in awe at how she does what she does! Welcome to my little space, mama!
What was your inspiration behind starting Spearmint Spruce?
Spearmint Spruce came after my shared business with my best friend came to a close. She was moving way far away and we thought it would be easier to branch off individually instead of trying to work together from so far apart. So we created sister shops in the hope that if she moves back (fingers crossed!) that we could pick up where we left off and do markets and shows together with a cohesive feel. So! All that to say, that Spearmint Spruce launched solo this past January and has grown more than I could have ever hoped. I started making things as an outlet while my husband spent lots of time away with the army. It was a way that I could express myself after the kids were tucked into bed. A time to explore, create, and challenge myself. Even now, as it takes up a bit more time and is a little more involved, it is still an outlet that calms me and helps provide for my family while also keeping me sane during these long days, but short, fleeting years.
How did you choose the name for your business?
My husband actually came up with the name. I love the smells of spearmint, peppermint, and all things trees and he threw those two together and I instantly loved it!
How do you balance running your business and homeschooling and rocking motherhood at the same time?
GRACE! From my husband, my kids, the people who buy from my little shop, and from me. Some days I think I have it all together and things are going great…but then most days I am humbled and realize that it’s a daily learning and balancing act. I have found a few things that help~allow more time then I think I actually need to do orders, allot time for me to sew, crochet, knit…time where nothing else is scheduled and the kids are playing after school work, but lastly the most important thing I’ve learned is to play/teach first, work later. If I try to flip this – the most important things don’t get done and hearts are hurt. I learned this even before Spearmint Spruce. For example, if I was doing dishes and one of the wildlings asked to play, it went over much better if I communicated to them, “mommy can play now for 15 minutes, but then I have some things I’d like to get done.” It was way more effective then to keep saying “After this…” “When I’m done…” Because honestly, with 5 kids, my chores are never done. So they feel important and loved because they get the time the deserve, and then their cups are full when they need to entertain themselves while I check off some to-do lists. At the end of the day, I am a wife first, a mother second, and a business owner third. So my priorities and actions should reflect that order.
What products do you currently have in stock? Do you have a favorite product you’ve created?
Currently, I have a variety of scarves and cowls in stock. My favorite products are my leather bags. They are all different and they all have their own character and style. I also love the boho triangle scarves..so simple, but add so much to an outfit!
Any advice you can offer the mom who is wanting to start-up a little business or looking to extend her creative side? What are some good first steps? Do you have advice for mamas who don’t feel so creative?
Just do it! It sounds so cliché, but truly, if you want to do something, just start. I took the first step a few years ago by refinishing some furniture and snapping some pictures and made a Facebook page for my goods. It was scary and vulnerable, but has grown me and stretched me in so many ways! If you don’t feel so creative but like to make things, take a class! Learn something new. I try very hard not to be complacent in any aspect of my life: my walk with the Lord, being a mama, becoming a better wife/partner, and as a creative making new things. Also, creativity looks so different everyone. You can be creative with words, paint, schooling, as a wife, homemaking, crocheting, gardening, and so much more!
Molly is the maker behind @spearmintspruce. As a full-time wife and mama, she turned to creating leather and crochet goods as an outlet while her husband was away often with the military. With a degree in interior design and fashion merchandising, her favorite courses were those that involved textiles and the fibre arts. Alas – spearmint spruce was born after a few years of co-owning another business with her best friend. Inspired by nature, coziness, and her faith, she creates goods for the wild at heart that aim to reflect the beauty and creativity of her creative God.
